It was probably the last thing visitors to Blenheim Palace expected to find on a day trip to the Oxford world heritage site.

But joining the ducks on the palace's picturesque lake this weekend were champion wakeboarders from around the globe.

The cows were herded off and replaced with hoards of stampeding festival-goers and the twitter of gentle birdsong was drowned out by indie rock legends Supergrass, old favourites The Happy Mondays and dance stars Groove Armada.

This was the first year Blenheim Palace had played host to this hybrid music and extreme sports festival and it proved a stunning location.

For the past eight years it has been staged in Abersoch, North Wales, but this year there are two events, the second of which takes place this weekend.

It was a 20-minute stroll from the main festival site through fields down to the grassy banks of the lake.

From the water's edge, crowds lazed on rugs and chilled out while world-class wakeboarders battled for the grand Wakestock title.

Argentinian Robbie Rendo won the female title while Dan Nott became this year's male Wakestock champion and Cyril Cornaro won the Big Air Competition.

The adrenaline buzz continued into the early hours with three stages offering a diverse range of acts from Norman Jay, Mark Ronson and The Nextmen to Black Kids, Futureheads and The Streets.

Aussie drum and bass act Pendulum were the talk of the festival after playing a storming gig on the Friday evening, and Supergrass pumped out a rocking finale on the Sunday.

A small festival with a big personality, Wakestock is one of the coolest parties of the summer.

It should inspire people to grab a board and get out on the water.
