A teenager's poignant tribute song in memory of his best friend could soon be heard on the radio.

George Williams, 16, penned the track following the death of Max Weston, also 16, in December.

He recorded Rest In Peace Max in his bedroom in Tilbury Way, Brighton, to play at his former class mate's memorial day at Varndean School in Balfour Road, Brighton, on July 22.

The rap tune will be recorded in a music studio on July 26.

Max died after a night out with a friend. He panicked and ran when confronted by police in Ditchling Road, Brighton.

Moments later he was found at the bottom of a wall with head injuries.

Five days later he died at Hurstwood Park Hospital in Haywards Heath.

His mother Kerry Tester spoke to theatre company Chicken Shed after watching its play The Mother Of A Brown Boy, about a teenage boy who died following a police chase.

The theatre company used George's song at the end of the final performance of the play, which is due to be performed again next year.

Director David Carey said: "The song was fantastic and I used it to end my play.

"I've invited George to record it in the studio so Ms Tester can have a quality copy, which she can send to local radio stations."

Ms Tester, of Osborne Road, Brighton, said: "I was invited to watch the play because it was about a boy who died like Max.

"Afterwards I got chatting to the producer and told him about George's song.

"Chicken Shed played it at the end of its performance.

"I'm very proud of George.

"The words he has come up with speak for everybody."

George, who plans to attend Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College to study sport and maths, said: "The song is about how I was feeling after Max died.

"I'm excited about the recording but a little nervous too.

"I hope we can go on to sell the CD and raise money for the memorial day at Varndean School.

"It will also be sent to radio stations and will appear on YouTube."

Varndean School headteacher Andy Schofield said: "George has produced an amazing track.

"I am incredibly proud of him.

"I had no idea he could sing."

The memorial day on July 22 will also honour former pupil Josh James, 15, of Birch Grove Crescent, Brighton, who died of cancer in 2004.
