It's testament to the peculiar and eclectic nature of the creative spirit in Brighton that a group like Le Band Extraordinaire exist.

Their wide range of influences is fairly explicit, tapping into the avant-garde and theatrical tradition of undisputed greats such as Kurt Weill and Frank Zappa, but this makes their approach to composition no less accomplished or thrilling.

Managing to combine these sources with an ear for what makes good pop music 'Mobility Bridge' is a near-perfect piece of song writing, whereas the more aggressive 'Oy' has them veering into punkier territory with great effect.

Tonight's gig was a joyous and revelatory affair, and if their sound lacked a little cohesion at times, this was more than made up for by their playful sense of adventure and experimentation.

There's quite a few dreary indie bands that could learn a thing or two from Le Band, even in a musically rich city like ours.
