Albion fans travelling for their Europa League trip to Marseille are being told to “expect a hostile environment” and not wear club colours.

Brighton and Hove Albion met French police, Olympique de Marseille and governing body Uefa in preparation for the match on October 5.

The advice from French police is to not wear any clothing that will identify supporters as Albion fans or congregate in large groups.

They are also being advised not to visit the Old Port area of the city and could face a fine for doing so.

Marseille fans have been banned from European matches as recently as last year.

In October last year, a Marseille fan faced an attempted murder charge for allegedly firing a flare that seriously injured a visiting German fan at their stadium Stade Velodrome.

Supporters are being urged to take out travel insurance and be wary of street crime including pickpockets. They should also carry photo ID at all times in the city.

The police said that La Joliette area of Marseille has bars and restaurants where supporters should base themselves on the day of the match. Additional food and drink facilities and a DJ will be provided in Place de la Joliette.

Albion will also provide a club travel line on the day of the match which fans can ring up and there will be a dedicated Twitter handle which provides information from the club and French police.

This square is the key location for Albion fans in terms of collecting tickets and travelling to the match.

Every individual ticket holder is required to collect their tickets in person with matching photo ID (passport) from the ticket collection point. Details of the location will be emailed to supporters with visitor section tickets and will be open from afternoon to early evening the day before the match.

On match day the collection point will be open from the morning until three hours before kick-off at 6.45pm French time.

French police require all away supporters with tickets in the visitors’ section to use a complimentary bus service from Place de la Joliette.

Buses will travel in multiple convoys with a police escort.

Fans are being advised “under no circumstances” to arrange alternative transport to the stadium.

Wheelchair users can pre-book taxis to and from the stadium.

Following a request from the Albion, Olympique de Marseille will make alcohol available to BHAFC supporters at the stadium.

Only very small bags and purses will be permitted into the stadium. Do not take bags larger than A4 size to the stadium. Bag storage facilities will not be available at the stadium.

The club has given a list of prohibited items including portable battery packs.

Supporters will be held back inside the stadium for at least 45 minutes after the final whistle for safety reasons.

Albion are urging fans not to place flags or banners on statues or monuments in the city.

Brighton also play AEK Athens and Amsterdam-based Ajax in group B.
