Emergency services closed off part of the A259 after a crash.
Police and paramedics were called to the Newhaven Swing Bridge late last night following reports of a crash, understood to involve a pedestrian and a car.
A car at the scene of the collision was seen with a smashed windscreen and damage to the front of the vehicle.
Motorists were urged to avoid the affected area, with diversions in place via the A26 and A27.
The road reopened in the early hours of this morning.
Sussex Police have been approached for comment.
