A vegan restaurant has been told to improve as it has been given a new one out of five food hygiene rating.

Green Kitchen in Preston Road, Brighton, is one of 30 restaurants in the city to receive new ratings.

Staff at the vegan restaurant have been told that “major improvement” is necessary after its latest inspection on August 21.

It was rated one by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), a government department which monitors food safety and hygiene.

Elsewhere, two takeaways were told their food hygiene was “generally satisfactory” as they were given a three rating.

These were the Beach House Café at The Old Police Box in Madeira Drive and Island Takeaway in Edward Street, both rated last month.

Restaurants Tropical Sushi in Western Road and Toota, which sells kebabs, in Preston Street received a “good” four out of five rating.

The following restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaways received the top five rating, meaning food hygiene is very good:

  • Hawk's Cafe at Whitehawk Football Club
  • Longhill High School in Falmer Road
  • Moonstone Sri Lankan Restaurant in Church Road
  • Pinocchio in New Road
  • Sunbirds in London Road
  • The Village Fish Bar in South Street, Portslade
  • Brighton Footgolf at Benfield Valley Golf Course
  • Shakey's Kitchen in Chatham Place
  • The Railway Inn in Station Road, Portslade
  • Arissy At The Kemp in St Georges Road
  • The Kemp at Thomas Kemp, St Georges Road
  • China Chef Express in Beaconsfield Road
  • Crave in Eastern Road
