Firefighters were called to rescue five cows trapped in a mud pond.
The animals had escaped their farm and fell into the pit at the side of Plumpton Lane, Plumpton, near Lewes, at 1.04pm on Saturday.
Two pumps from Barcombe and Lewes and the animal rescue unit from Crowborough attended.
Two cows managed to wade free and the other three were rescued by firefighters.
