Residents are being told their bins will not be emptied for two days as council workers take strike action.

Bosses at Unison have given the go ahead for the strikes on July 16 and 17 in a row over pay.

The 48-hour walkout will affect a range of council services and is likely to shut schools and libraries and other local authority run services.

Worthing and Adur councils warned people their bins would not be collected as all hope of averting the strikes looked to have ended.

Binmen in other parts of the county could also down tools, leading to scenes similar to those witnessed in Brighton and Hove in February when binmen went on strike for three days in a row over working conditions.

A spokeswoman for Worthing and Adur councils advised people not to put their rubbish out during the strikes in a bid to stop the same happening.

She said: "Households expecting a refuse or recycling service on either of these two days are asked not to place bags, boxes or wheeled bins out for collection."
