Shoreham Port has been awarded tens of thousands of pounds by the government to promote recreational fishing and open the sport up to disabled people.

The port’s west arm is already a popular fishing spot but it is hoped the area will become busier still after the £24,018 grant is spent on creating an access path between the west arm and a car park.

It means people with disabilities will have a safe way to access the west arm and it is hoped the new path will attract more people to the area.

Shoreham Port won the grant as part of the government’s £3.9 million budget to improve the quality of training facilities to upskill the workforce and promote seafood careers, as well as build new and improved sea fishing infrastructure.

Fisheries minister Mark Spencer said: “We have already seen the great success that funding from the UK Seafood Fund has contributed to, from upgrading ports and aquaculture facilities to creating innovative training programmes to attract fresh blood into the sector.

“Today’s investment will help to support the industry so that our existing and future workforce is equipped with the necessary skills and facilities to join the sector and benefit from the brilliant opportunities that are available to them with a career in seafood.”
