Investigations into a flat fire continue after a woman died.

Cllrs John Hewitt, Amanda Grimshaw and Faiza Baghoth paid tribute to a 42-year-old woman who was pronounced dead shortly after the fire.

The Labour councillors also reassured residents that the damaged building in Kingston Close, Hangleton was being made safe.

The Hangleton and Knoll councillors said: “We are extremely saddened to learn that a resident has died in a house fire in Kingston Close. This is tragic news for our community and our thoughts are with the person’s friends and family.

“We would like to reassure residents that the fire was contained and firefighters are making sure the damaged building is made safe. There is no intention to move any residents in the surrounding area out of their homes.

“Understandably this will be a shock to residents and we encourage anyone who is concerned to contact us. 

“Sussex Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway and are appealing for witnesses. We encourage anyone who has any information that can help, to contact police online or via 101, quoting Operation Compton.”

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 5am on Tuesday morning and the 42-year-old woman was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Six appliances were called to the incident.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
