A ghost hunter said he was left shocked after being told to “get out” by an apparent spirit in a 150-year-old fort.
Tony Ferguson visited the underground bunkers and tunnels of Newhaven Fort during the evening last Thursday.
The 38-year-old, who searches historical sites for ghosts, said he was left scratching his head after hearing footsteps and a male voice whispering for him to “get out”.
Ghost hunts are held at the fort and people have reported hearing soldiers’ footsteps, being pushed and seeing dark figures slipping into the shadows.
Tony told The Argus: “The scariest part was hearing the footsteps, I heard it clear as day. I was expecting someone to be there. It sounded like someone with boots.
“That for me was interesting. When I heard the ‘get out’ it was behind me, I felt like someone was behind me the whole time. That’s when I left, I did not feel welcome.
“I’m not there to antagonise but I’m there if anyone is there to communicate. When it gets like that I’m not going to overstay my welcome.
“I heard footsteps walking down to the tunnels, I went to have a look and found nothing there at all. I heard a male say ‘get out’ which has come out on the camera.
"When I was down there I didn’t feel like I was alone. It was one of those places where I was left scratching my head. It felt like I was chasing shadows. I felt uneasy.”
Newhaven Fort is the largest defence work ever built in Sussex and is one of 72 coastal forts following the apparently threatening behaviour of Napoleon the Third, who was building his navy and strengthening his own coastal defences.
The fort was also used during World War One and World War Two.
Tony, from Southampton, added: “I left the video raw so people can make their own judgments.
“I’m quite sceptical about equipment, a lot of it can be explained. I’m just a man with a camera, if I come out with something I do, but sometimes I don’t.”
Tony runs a Facebook page called Tony Ferguson Ghost Whisperer.
