A Sussex MP has been given a new government position amid Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet reshuffle.

Andrew Griffith, MP for Arundel and South Downs, has moved from his role as economic secretary to a new job as science minister.

Mr Griffith said he was “delighted” to accept the position, which he said is “all about the sort of opportunities British investors should back”.

He said: “We’re on the forefront of revolutionary technological development and I look forward to building on my work to unleash capital to support these exciting opportunities.”

It comes as two other Sussex MPs quit the government as the Prime Minister sacked Suella Braverman as home secretary and brought former Prime Minister David Cameron into the Cabinet as foreign secretary.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb announced he would stand down as schools minister and would not be a candidate at the next general election. Mr Gibb, now the third MP to say they will not run for re-election, said he will take up a diplomatic role after voters go to the polls next year.

Horsham MP Jeremy Quin also quit the government yesterday, leaving his post as Paymaster General.

Four other Sussex Conservative MPs remain in the government; with Chichester MP Gillian Keegan as education secretary, Bexhill and Battle MP Huw Merriman as rail minister, Lewes MP as junior minister for women, and Mid Sussex MP Mims Davies as social mobility, youth and progression minister.

Mr Merriman was among the Conservative MPs to welcome the return of former Prime Minister David Cameron to the Cabinet and told Channel 4 News he would bring “experience” to the table.

He said: “It’s great to see him back. I think the country trusts him, sees him as a fair and reasonable person, and perhaps the type of person we want to see inside government.”

When quizzed whether the move seems desperate, Mr Merriman told Channel 4 News: “I think it shows clout from the Prime Minister - he can attract a former Prime Minister and come back and work in the team.”
