An investigation will be launched after a huge blaze at an industrial building.

The fire broke out at a building just off the A22 at Golden Cross, near Hailsham, at 2.24pm on Saturday, December 2.

Eight fire engines were at the scene and crews used three jet hoses and firefighting foam to tackle the blaze.

Thick smoke billowed from the unit, a caravan dealership called Marquis Motorhomes, and surrounding roads were closed by police.

The closures on the A22 and in surrounding roads including Charlington Way, Coldharbour Road, Camberlot Road, Nash Street and Burgh Hill Road remained in place until the fire was dealt with.

People were warned to avoid the area and nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors shut.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called at 2.24pm on December 2, 2023, to an industrial building fire in Golden Cross, Chiddingly.

“As of 7.27pm on Saturday, the incident has been scaled down and crews are damping down and turning over to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

“Road closures remain in place so please continue to avoid the area.”

“There are no casualties reported.

“A fire investigation will take place in due course.”

At 9am on Sunday the roads had reopened.
