A man took a knife into a shop and was stopped by security staff.
Police were called to a shop in Western Road in Hove this morning following reports of a man with a knife.
The man was challenged by security workers and dropped the knife.
The weapon was seized and recovered by police.
The Argus understands that the incident took place in the Co-op in Western Road, with a witness reporting seeing officers rushing into the shop.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a knife.
He remains in police custody.
A witness at the scene told The Argus: “As I walked past, there were about five police cars and some private security by the side of the road.
“One of the security guards said that a man had a knife and I could hear someone shouting from the back of a police van.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a shop in Western Road, Hove, at 8.15am on Friday, December 8, following a report of a man in possession of a knife.
“He was challenged by security workers and dropped the knife, which was seized and recovered by police.
“Following enquiries, a 33-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a knife. He remains in custody at this time.”
