More snow is on the way for Sussex this month, forecasts show. 

Much of the county was hit with flurries yesterday and a dusting settled in Devil's Dyke and Queen's Park, Brighton

The snow became got heavier into the afternoon and at Jack and Jill windmill in Clayton, near Hassocks, the ground was covered and visibility was low.

It comes as more snow is forecast for Brighton later this month.

WX Charts, a weather forecasting website, predicts that around a centimetre will fall on Wednesday, January 17, and overnight into Thursday, January 18.

West and East Sussex County Councils had their gritters out on major routes to de-ice the roads last night.

The county has just emerged from a yellow Met Office weather warning for ice, which finished at 3am today. 

But Sussex is still in the throes of an amber cold health alert from the UK Health Security Agency, in place until noon on Friday, January 12

While it does not look as if snow will return this week, temperatures will stay low. 

Today, temperatures will hover around 2C across the county. 

In response to the cold weather, Brighton and Hove City Council and Adur and Worthing Councils have opened shelters for rough sleepers during the cold weather.

In Brighton, the shelters are open until Monday, January 15.

In a statement on its website, a spokesman for Adur and Worthing Councils said: "Our severe weather emergency protocol (Swep) is being triggered in Adur and Worthing from Friday, January 5, to Thursday, January 11, due to the Met Office weather warning for the area.

"All rough sleepers in Adur and Worthing who have no alternative option for these nights can access accommodation if they need to. Our outreach teams are out advising rough sleepers and working with our housing needs team to assist them into accommodation as well as checking on their welfare.

"If you are worried about someone who is sleeping rough, please use the Streetlink website or app to report your concerns. Your messages will be sent direct to our outreach services who will try to find individuals and notify them of their options."
