A paedophile who was found with child porn and bestiality images on his phone has been spared jail.

Steven Cheffings was arrested at his home in Eastbourne after police tracked him using online platforms to discuss abusing children, some as young as eight.

Cheffings pleaded guilty to possessing 18 indecent category A, six category B and eight category C images, possessing extreme pornographic images of an animal and prohibited images of a child. A is the highest and worst category.

The 35-year-old was arrested by Sussex Police on September 22, 2022. He gave his phone and provided the pin code straight away, Lewes Crown Court sitting in Brighton heard.

Cheffings, currently of no fixed address, was interviewed on the same day and was told not to have contact with children or go to his home address.

The father-of-four has been remanded in custody since December 28 due to a breach of his bail conditions, the court heard.

George Skinner, defending, said Cheffings had a "realistic chance of rehabilitation" and asked for a suspended sentence.

He said: “He has put his hands up and accepts what he has done. He has lost everything as a result but understands his actions that have caused this.

“It has been a short, sharp shock him being in prison for a short time.”

The court heard that Cheffings had a “difficult childhood” as he was abused when he was a child. He also witnessed domestic abuse in his house.

Mr Skinner said: “He needs counselling and therapy to move on from that event.

“He would find himself locked in rooms or kicked out on to the streets.”

Cheffings, who previously worked as a hod carrier, was described as a man of previous good character. He had one previous conviction of possessing cocaine in 2012.

Judge David Rennie said: “People who engage with this repulsive material help further an industry that abuses children in the worst ways possible.

“People like you can sit in dark rooms with access to this content. It is appalling.”

Cheffings was sentenced to ten months in prison, suspended for two years. He also has to undertake 47 days of various rehabilitation sessions.

He was also handed a ten year sexual harm prevention order.
