A council forked out hundreds of thousands of pounds to tackle damp and mould in its properties.

Adur District Council revealed in a Freedom of Information response that it received 88 complaints between November 2021 and 2023 about mould and damp from residents.

To rectify the problem and improve properties the council said it spent £287,049.81.

A council spokesman said: “The safety of our residents is paramount and we carry out improvement works on our homes to ensure they are safe and habitable for everyone living in them.

“We also provide detailed guidance on managing mould and damp in the home for residents and have updated our guidance for managing moisture.

The FOI was submitted by LegalExpert.co.uk.

“We encourage our tenants to tell us about any damp and mould in their homes so we can take action to help them.

“Across our more than 2,500 Adur Homes properties we recorded 88 complaints about damp and mould between November 2021 and November 2023.

“We carry out repairs on our homes on a day-to-day basis when we become aware they are necessary. We are also preparing a proactive programme of works to replace roofs, windows and doors and undertake energy efficiency improvements in our properties across Adur over the coming years to make our homes better for our tenants and importantly safe, secure and sustainable.”
