A couple who were on the run were seen buying supplies at a garage before the trail on their whereabouts "went cold" for over a month.

Jurors in the trial of Constance Marten, 36, and Mark Gordon, 49 accused of the manslaughter of their daughter Victoria who was found dead in a disused shed in Brighton last March, were shown CCTV footage on Monday.

In the videos, Marten is seen buying snacks at the Texaco petrol station in Avis Way, Newhaven on January 12 last year.

It is alleged the couple lived off-grid on the South Downs in a bid to keep the baby after four other children were taken into care.

The court has previously heard that this was the final sighting of the couple before the “trail went cold” until February 20 when they were spotted near Hollingbury Golf Course, Joel Smith, prosecuting, said.

On Monday, jurors at the Old Bailey were told how this footage was among thousands of hours of footage collected by police during the investigation.

In the footage, a woman in a surgical mask with her hood up, who the prosecution allege is Constance Marten, is seen with a basket full of snacks at the till of the garage.

The defendants, of no fixed address, deny manslaughter by gross negligence between January 4 and February 27 last year.

They are also charged with perverting the course of justice, concealing the birth of a child, child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of a child.

The Old Bailey trial continues.
