A Sussex pie company owner escaped being fired by Lord Sugar in the latest episode of The Apprentice.

Phil Turner, who owns Bognor family-owned business Turner’s Pies, led the boys’ team this week as candidates vying for a £250,000 investment in their business made cheesecakes to sell to the public and corporate clients.

However, Phil’s team encountered confrontation from the outset, with disagreement over whether to opt for chocolate or fruit.

After choosing chocolate, sub-team leader Paul Bowen was sent to pitch the decadent cheesecake to drinks maker Innocent, which sells fruit and vegetable-based smoothies and juices.

Paul, who is the director of a pie company, was accused of “banging on about chocolate” to the health-conscious food company, despite the client explaining they “want to celebrate fruit and veg”.

After a change of plan, the team prepared a dragon fruit, apricot and avocado filling for their cheesecakes, but feedback from the client was not positive, with the avocado being called “a bit odd” and the base described as “something a primary school class could have made”.

Phil also faced criticism for opting for too low a price when selling cheesecakes to the public after the team failed to make as large a profit as the girls’ team.

In the boardroom, Lord Sugar told Paul, who had claimed he could turn him into ‘Lord of the Pies’, to leave the process.

Lord Sugar said: “Paul, I admire you for admitting your mistakes but there were simply too many mistakes and so it is with regret, Paul, you’re fired.”

After failing to secure the £250,000 investment, Paul said: “The biggest regret is obviously banging on about chocolate but, hey, it’s time to go back and make some pies.”

Next week’s episode will see the remaining 16 candidates create a virtual escape room.

In a promo for the episode, Lord Sugar was seen describing one of the games as being “as complicated as a one-piece jigsaw”.

The Apprentice airs every Thursday at 9pm on BBC One.

Budding entrepreneurs can take part in the next series of the show, with applications closing on February 14.
