Two people have been arrested and six are in hospital after a major border force incident at Newhaven ferry port.

Dozens of police officers, paramedics and border officials descended on the port at around 10am on Friday.

Sussex Police have now confirmed a number of people have been taken to hospital and two people arrested.

A spokesman said the force is currently supporting Border Force, who are the leading agency, and other emergency services after a lorry on a ferry arrived at Newhaven.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry to the UK, and a second man has been arrested for illegally entering the UK," he added.

"The ambulance service has taken six further people to hospital for treatment."

It has been reported that people were found in a freezer lorry that arrived at the ferry port this morning.

The Argus understands the people are all believed to have been found alive. Emergency services have not officially confirmed this.
