An ex-police officer has opened his own coffee shop after selling hot drinks on a beach.

Nick Bartlett, 52, was an officer for nearly 20 years before he pursued his passion for coffee and "never looked back".

He opened The Coffee Camp Shoreham, in Brighton Road, in December last year.

The café is Nick's second branch, with the first shop located in Findon.

Nick said: "I was in the police locally for nearly 20 years before taking the plunge and following my passion for speciality coffee.

"Initially I took a year out on unpaid leave and spent it on Worthing beach selling coffee from a vintage VW camper van.

"I fell in love with what I was doing so in December 2019 I quit the police force and have never looked back."

Although there are several cafes in the area, Nick told The Argus that his is a café with a difference as he focuses specifically on speciality coffee.

He also said he chose to open the Shoreham branch on the A259 as it is surrounded by a "thriving community".

Nick said: "It's early days but everybody who has been in loves what we've done with the small space, modern, bright with a high-quality finish.

"It's in the middle of what will be a thriving little community of local businesses and new residential properties on the river.

"I chose Shoreham because I've worked there in the past and love the community and know there is a big passion for coffee."

The cafe, near to the new housing developments, including Free Wharf, works directly with coffee roasters.

Its house coffee is roasted by Craft House Coffee in Haywards Heath.

The café is one of two new additions to the town, with Clubhouse Coffee set to open later this month.

Nick said: "We are passionate about coffee and love to talk to our customers about it.

"We’re extremely inclusive and make everyone feel at home and part of the coffee camp experience."

The café also has gluten-free and vegan snacks available.
