Fire crews were called to a blaze at an apartment in the early hours of the morning.
Firefighters from Crawley, Horsham and Surrey tackled the blaze at a property in Bellevue Farm Road in the village of Pease Pottage, near Crawley.
The fire erupted shortly after 1am this morning.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) urged people to avoid the area to allow firefighters to work safely.
WSFRS has been approached for comment.
