Armed police were called to a report of a man with a gun in the city.
There was a report of a man with a gun in Beaconsfield Road, Brighton, at around 12.30pm today. Officers tracked him to London Road.
They arrested a 54-year-old man from Brighton on suspicion of possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.
Sussex Police said an imitation firearm was recovered and no one was harmed.
The man remains in custody.
