People can have a will drawn up for under £300 as a result of a charity initiative.

From April 1, Brighton and Hove residents can book an appointment with a participating solicitor who will help them draft their document for a small contribution as part of Martlets' "Will Writing Month" in May.

The solicitors will give their time to write the wills in exchange for a contribution to the hospice charity, which provides care to terminally ill people in Brighton, Hove and the surrounding areas.

The contribution requested is £150 for a single will or £250 for a joint one.

As some wills can cost up to £700, Martlets said this is a significant cost saving.

The solicitors taking part come from across the county and include Burt Brill and Cardens, ACT Legal Limited, Goodlaw Solicitors, Robert Simon and Co, UHY Hacker Young, Barwells Peacehaven, Barwells Newhaven, and Coole Bevis LLP.

People can start booking the appointments, to be held in May, from Monday until April 30.

Martlets said that although it is not a requirement for people to donate to the charity in their wills, all money raised from the programme will go a long way in helping it continue caring for people

You can express interest in the will writing initiative by registering on the Martlets website, emailing giftsinwill@martlets.org.uk or by phoning 01273 916960.

More information about leaving a gift in a will can also be found at www.martlets.org.uk/give-in-your-will.

Grant Phillips, gifts in wills and grants executive at Martlets, said: "We understand that thinking about what happens after you are gone isn’t easy.

"However, getting your will professionally written means that you’ll have peace of mind that your wishes will be followed and that the people or causes you care about most are going to benefit."

Martlets relies on the community to fund most of its services. Registration for the will-writing initiative ends on April 30.
