A 70-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she was knocked down by a van.

The woman was hit at the junction of Warwick Street and Brighton Road in Worthing yesterday at around 3.15pm.

An air ambulance landed at Worthing beach but she was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton by road ambulance.

Sussex Police said she suffered serious injuries which are not believed to be life threatening or life changing. She remains in hospital.

A spokesman said: “An investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any dash-cam footage is asked to contact collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk quoting serial 829 of 26/03.”

Sussex Police closed the road for around two hours. The work van which hit the pedestrian was inside a police cordon.

Firefighters also attended the scene.

There was heavy traffic on the A259 and around The Steyne following the crash. Marine Parade on the seafront was also closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.
