A new boardwalk is being built at a National Trust site.

The curved path, currently under construction at Sheffield Park in Uckfield, will allow visitors to stand beneath a veteran oak tree without damaging its roots.

It will also improve accessibility for wheelchair users and prams.

The path will be elevated to minimise damage to the roots.

The Argus: It will be able to accommodate wheelchairs and prams

Landscape designer Joe Perkins said: "The general ethos behind the project is one of sustainability wherever possible.

"It’s about reusing materials, not taking materials away from site and minimising the use of concrete, for example."

Joe, owner of Joe Perkins Design, said the timber is a type that "typically lasts for hundreds of years". It will be less slippery than other materials.

He said: "There is a perception that decking can be slippery, so this was another reason for choosing this particularly durable timber."

The boardwalk is wide enough to allow two wheelchairs or pushchairs to be able to pass each other comfortably.

There will be low guard rails with a difference in height either side to make sure people don’t stray off the boardwalk.
