The collapse happened just 2.5 miles away from another collapse near the Rushey Hill Caravan Park in Peacehaven.

There were more than 50 large cliff falls across Sussex in the last year, according to a recent warning from Eastbourne Borough Council.

The authority warned people not to let the views of the coastline be their “last” by standing too close to the edge.

Pictures emerged today of a sightseer sitting on a 400-foot chalk cliff puffing on a cigarette wirth his feet dangling over the edge.

Photographer JJ Waller captured the image and said it is “almost a daily occurrence despite the warnings”.

Workers maintain the cliffs where the undercliff walk runs between Brighton Marina and Saltdean.
