Over 50 pieces of explosive ordnance were found at a beach.

The items on Medmerry Beach were reported to the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team at around 5.20pm on Wesdnesday.

A cordon was put in place and the explosive ordnance disposal (E.O.D) team attended the scene to take some of the items away.

Both teams then returned on Thursday morning when it was no longer dark to deal with the 52 remaining items.

Two controlled explosions were carried out and the teams remained on the scene for three hours.

A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "If you come across ordnance or something you're not sure about on the beach, please don't touch it and call the coastguard straight away.

"This beach is closed to the public with no access due to multiple dangers including unexploded ordnance.

"Please do not go past the rock armour on Medmerry Beach."

The beach has been closed to the public for years as a result of multiple explosive devices being found on the shoreline.
