A rare sports car once owned by Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna has hit the market for £500,000.

Robert McFagan, from Whitesmith, near Lewes, is selling the red Honda NSX, one of three owned by Senna.

The car was kept at the Brazilian star's home in Portugal and he was regularly photographed with it – with famous pictures of him washing the model circulating in 1991.

The NSX also featured in the 1992 film Racing Is In My Blood, during which Senna lights up the back wheels with a wheel spin.

It was also driven around the Imola circuit by Giancarlo Minardi in 2019 on the 25th anniversary of Senna’s death, in front of tens of thousands of fans.

Only a handful of models are still in existence meaning whoever buys the car has the chance to own part of automotive and racing history.

Senna’s Honda is currently owned by Mr McFagan who said the model’s powerful engine, responsive handling and aerodynamic design makes it an exhilarating car to drive.

He said: “I first bought the car in 2013 during a trip to the Algarve in Portugal and have owned it ever since, where it has sat proudly at my estate in Whitesmith.

“Being a huge fan of Senna, I was delighted when I was able to get my hands on the NSX which was crafted to perfection and features a sleek and powerful machine to give an incredible experience on the road.

“It’s been a real pleasure owning what is one of the most famous cars belonging to a true sporting legend and the thrill of driving Senna’s car never goes away.”

The NSX, which was registered in 1991, has just over 39,000 miles on the clock.

It joins a long list of celebrity and royal cars previously listed on Auto Trader’s platform, including those from the late Queen Elizabeth II and footballer David Beckham.

Erin Baker, editorial director of Auto Trader, where the car is up for sale, said: “As the UK’s largest automotive marketplace for used and new cars, we sell some 450,000 vehicles every day of different sizes, styles and price points and we often see cars once owned from celebrities to royalty being listed on our site.

“Mr Senna’s impact on Formula 1 and the world of motorsport was immeasurable and his iconic Honda NSX is a chance to own a rare piece of sporting history which will no doubt turn heads and spark conversations amongst friends, family, and neighbours.”

Considered one of the sport's greatest ever drivers, Ayrton Senna dominated the Formula 1 scene in the late 80s and early 90s.

He won a total of 41 races and was a three-time world champion before he died at the age of 34 during the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy, on May 1, 1994.

His legacy has lived on with a critically acclaimed film depicting his life released in 2010.
