A much-loved community pub described as a "lifeline" for vulnerable people has launched a campaign to save itself from the brink of closure.

The Bevy has been at the centre of the community in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, since it opened in 2014 but has faced shutting its doors in recent months over fears about its finances and its future.

Now, the pub says the community can help it thrive rather than survive - and that all money raised will be quadrupled through crowdfunding support.

Warren Carter, chairman of The Bevy pub, said: "Over the past year there’s been many times when I felt we would have to call last orders for the final time. We were haemorrhaging money, every bill that came in seemed to have doubled and people weren’t coming in as much.

"But the outpouring of support, both physical and financial, has been heartening. It wasn’t until last month that we nearly broke even, so we’ve still got plenty to go.

“People rightly ask why do we need to bail out a pub when there are so many other worthy causes, but we measure our community pub not just in the pints poured and the cash through the tills – just as well given our recent circumstances – but how we can bring people together and change lives."

Launching the Bevy Boost campaign, the pub said the money raised will let it maintain its community support including healthy food offerings and help for senior and disabled citizens.

Money raised through the campaign will be matched three times over by Crowdfunder's Cost of Living Resilience Fund. The pub would receive a £20,000 boost for every £5,000 it raises itself.

The Bevy put out a rallying cry in July 2023 calling for support from the community to help keep it afloat.

The venue is recognised as the only community owned pub on an estate in the country.

It offers a number of free and low cost benefits including senior citizen clubs, discos for disabled residents and a host of community events.
