Three Isle of Wight men have been arrested and a police investigation has been launched, after two six-year-old girls were spoken to by a man in a van.

Three men, aged 33, 39 and 46, are in custody after they were detained on suspicion of attempting to take a child, so as to remove them from a person having lawful control.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to Westminster Lane, Newport, just before 7.15pm on Monday, April 29.

A van with three men inside stopped, at around 6.40pm, police said.

One of the men got out of the van and briefly spoke to two six year-old girls.

Physical contact was not made and the girls ran home, police confirmed.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it had identified all those it needed to speak to as part of its investigation.

Enquiries are ongoing and the men remain in custody.
