The bomb squad were called to the city after a suspicious package was found.
The Ministry of Defence sent its bomb disposal unit to Preston Street, Brighton, where police cordoned off part of the road 12.30am today.
Explosive search dogs were also at the scene and the bomb disposal robot was used.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Police were called to Preston Street in Brighton to a report of a suspicious package outside of a property.
"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) responded and carried out a controlled explosion.
"The area was declared safe, the road has been re-opened and there are no ongoing concerns."
The MOD has been contacted for further comment.
