Two elderly pedestrians were seriously injured when they were hit by a van near a care home.

A grey Vauxhall Vivaro van was travelling southbound on Copthorne Bank, Copthorne, near Crawley, on a right-hand bend, near to Francis Court Care Home, when the incident occurred about 9.55am on Saturday.

The pedestrians, a 77-year-old local man and a 68-year-old local woman, were both taken to hospital for treatment where they remain in a stable condition.

The driver of the van, an 80-year-old man from Horley in Surrey, was uninjured.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “An investigation is underway and anyone who saw what happened, or captured the incident on CCTV or dash cam, is asked to email quoting Operation Wicker.

“Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone with CCTV covering Copthorne Bank north of the allotments, or Redehall Road south of Smallfield village.”
