A man was seen waving a knife in a supermarket car park.
Officers were called to the Aldi car park in Carlton Terrace, Portslade, earlier this week after reports of a man with a knife.
They arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place, threatening a person with a knife, racially or religiously aggravated disorderly behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and theft from a shop.
He has since been bailed, with strict conditions, after the incident on Monday at around 3.45pm.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "Anyone with information or footage relating to the incident is asked to contact us. You can make a report online, or by calling 101 quoting reference 877of 20/05."
