Sussex Tudor country mansion to feature on Channel 5 show

Danny House in Hurstpierpoint is a unique retirement home.

The Grade I listed mansion, set at the foot of the South Downs National Park, will star in Channel 5’s The World’s Most Luxurious Retirement Homes this weekend.

Owner Richard Burrows told The Argus: “What makes Danny House luxurious is the level of service. There are ten staff members for ten to 25 residents.

“It has beautiful views and people get to live in a stately home in the way they did 120 years ago.”

At Danny House, residents are treated to around 70 concerts a year in the home’s Great Hall.

The hall has a hammerbeam roof and intricate woodwork.

Mr Burrows added: “Living in Danny House is like having your very own private theatre.

“Every year we host around 20 charity events and let the charities use our space for free.

“They can charge ticket costs to visitors so they make money. They are putting on things our residents enjoy.”

The programme will highlight the lifestyle at Danny House, where residents enjoy the beauty of a 100-acre estate.

In 1918, Danny House served as the temporary office of Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the War Cabinet. The Armistice agreement that ended the war was signed during Lloyd George's stay at Danny House, making it a site of national historical importance.

The show features personal stories from residents like 86-year-old Susan Rouse, a retired interior designer, and 90-year-old Joan Wilson, a retired computer programmer who now tends to the house’s gardens and looks after an orphaned lamb.

The house, which is shaped like an E for Queen Elizabeth I, will be featured alongside some of the most opulent retirement homes across the world, including The Palace in Miami, The Ridge in Pinehurst, Denver and Auriens in Chelsea, London.

The World’s Most Luxurious Retirement Homes is produced by ScreenDog, an independent production company based in Brighton. Their portfolio includes commissions such as Channel 4’s The Jury: Murder Trial.
