A safety warning has been issued to beach users ahead of the warmer summer months.

Adur and Worthing Councils have urged people engaging in watersports as well as anglers to avoid using the dedicated summer swimming areas.

These areas are at Lancing Beach Green, opposite Widewater Lagoon in Shoreham and off Southwick Beach.

They are clearly signposted, the councils said.

People have been asked to report breaches or near misses to the council's coastal office team.

A spokesman for Adur and Worthing Councils said: "To ensure the safety of swimmers, kite sports and anglers are reminded to avoid operating within the seasonal swim areas located at Lancing Beach Green, opposite Widewater Lagoon and off Southwick Beach.

"These are clearly denoted by yellow buoys with 'swim area' stencilled on them and are in place to help protect swimmers.

"Please don't invade their safe space. Report any breaches or near misses to our Coastal Office team on 01903 238977."
