Train passengers faced delays of more than 30 minutes after issues on the railway.
Safety inspections near Gatwick Airport caused services to Brighton to be delayed and cancelled with passenger left waiting on station platforms for more than half an hour.
A spokesman for Thameslink Railway said the issues were due to a safety inspection and apologised for delays.
The railway company said: "Network Rail are working on the defective track as quickly as possible. Whilst we wait for all lines to be open, you should allow an extra 20 minutes to complete your journey."
Lines have since re-opened but delays are continuing.
