An MP said she is “extremely disappointed” after the refusal of plans for 190 homes on farmland was overturned.

Developer Gleeson Land lodged an appeal after the application for the new homes on land west of Bewley Road in Angmering was initially rejected by Arun District Council in June.

Following a planning inquiry in October, the Planning Inspectorate upheld the appeal, meaning planning permission has been granted.

Worthing West MP Beccy Cooper joined outraged villagers at a protest on the land in August last year after the plans were submitted.

Ms Cooper said the proposal was “inappropriate” and did not “bring enough benefits to outweigh the harm on the landscape and character of Angmering”.

She also spoke against the plans at the planning inquiry.

The MP has now shared her disappointment at the Planning Inspectorate’s decision, which she said “ignores the wishes of local residents”.

She said: “I am extremely disappointed by the Planning Inspectorate’s decision to allow development of the site west of Bewley Road in Angmering.

“While I absolutely accept the need for more housing, this decision ignores the wishes of local residents, with over 1,700 objections having been raised, and overrides the democratic decision of Arun District Council – which, unfortunately, was not supported by the provision of a local plan.

“The decision also fails to take account of the already overstretched road infrastructure, health and education services needed to support the site, as well as the need for a more balanced mix of social and genuinely affordable housing.

“It also overlooks the severe environmental impact on an area which has already seen more than its fair share of new development.”

Ms Cooper commended campaigners who “worked so tirelessly to oppose the development”.

She added that she will be “looking into whether the National Planning Policy Framework is currently fit for purpose”.

Angmering Parish Council said it was “saddened” by the decision and it would “continue to monitor the next steps”.
