Coaches have been banned from one of Sussex's most popular beaches over the coming summer months.

West Wittering Beach has introduced the new rules limiting access for large vehicles, which will begin from May this year.

Under the new rules, coach visits will no longer be permitted between May and August inclusive, and will also be restricted on weekends and Bank Holidays.

School coaches will be exempt, and limited exceptions may also be considered for organised and supervised groups, where visits can be managed appropriately.

The new rules follow a recent review of coach visits and peak-time pressures by the West Wittering Estate, which is responsible for managing the beach.

A spokesperson for the estate said: "West Wittering Beach is a natural, family-friendly environment, and during busy periods our priority is to make sure everyone can enjoy the beach safely, comfortably and respectfully."

Multiple people expressed support for the decision on social media.

Charlotte King said: "Thank goodness. Last summer was crazy. Never seen so many coaches or people ever.

"So happy you have made this decision. I know it’s a lovely beach and everyone wants to enjoy it but protecting the sand dunes and people's safety seems like the right decision."

Jane Ditchburn added: "Thank goodness.

"Last year I was so shocked how coach parties didn’t know how to respect this beautiful beach.

"It's a very precious area, let’s keep it that way."

Coaches will also not be allowed to drop passengers off at the beach, with the nearest public coach parking located in Chichester.

Parking for coaches may be available outside of the new restricted periods but must be booked in advance, and is subject to limited capacity.

The cost for coach parking is £250 per vehicle, and includes all vehicles over 16 seats.

The award-winning West Wittering Beach is renowned for its natural beauty and commitment to conservation.

It is Blue Flag recognised for its water quality, high safety standards, and sustainable environment.
