The top 10 best-performing secondary schools in Sussex have been revealed.

The Telegraph has updated its 'league table' outlining the best secondary schools in the UK.

The news outlet analysed data from almost 3,500 state-sector secondary schools and provided each with a score out of 40.

Factors used to determine these scores included:

  • GCSE performance
  • Attendance rates
  • Class sizes
  • Attainment 8 scores

The league table draws on publicly available data – from exam results to class size – to help parents make informed decisions, it explained.

It adds: "With our unique 40-point scoring system based on nine indicators, it ranks local schools against national standards in England, giving parents the power to make the right choice for their child."

The Telegraph’s search tool allows users to enter postcodes from across the UK to find the best secondary schools nearby.

We have crunched the data and revealed the top 10 best secondary schools across Sussex.

What are the 10 best secondary schools in Sussex?

At the top of the whole table was St Philip Howard Catholic School, in Barnham, West Sussex.

It has an attainment 8 score of 52.5, which is a score that measures pupils' performances across eight subjects, including Maths and English.

The school has a higher percentage of pupils getting 5s or higher in their English Baccalaureate at 32.1%, far higher than the national average of 18%.

Other high-performing schools in Sussex include Downlands Community School and Millais School.

Each school is accompanied by its score out of 40, overall rating, as well as its GCSE 5+ rating, measured by the percentage of students who score a 5 or higher across five key GCSEs, with the national average being 18%.

If a school has the same overall score, it has been placed into alphabetical order.



What is the best secondary school in England?

The number one spot in the national secondary school ranking went to King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, which earned high scores in all categories.

The school has a perfect 40/40 rating and 97.3% of its 1,138 pupils get 5s or higher in their English Baccalaureate, despite the local average being 18.2%.
