A pensioner has appeared in court charged with murdering his elderly wife at their Sussex home.

The body of Beryl Pyke, 84, was found dead at home in Aldwick, near Bognor, on May 31.

Her husband, Michael Pyke, 78, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with her murder.

He appeared in front of magistrates at Crawley this morning (June 3).

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "On Sunday, May 31 at around 2pm, emergency services attended Langley Grove in Aldwick, after welfare concerns were raised for a resident inside an address.

"Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time."

Mr Pyke, a British national, of Langley Grove, Aldwick, will appear again at Lewes Crown Court tomorrow (June 4).

Detective Superintendent Colin Garman said: "Following such a significant and tragic incident, an investigation remains well underway.

"Officers continue to carry out a number of enquiries at the address and in the surrounding area, and an increased police presence will remain visible at this time.

"We recognise the impact this incident has had on the local community and thank residents for their patience and support as the investigation progresses."

Police are still appealing for witnesses who may have information to come forward.

Reports can be made online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Mayland.
