Tom Clark has handed Sussex a timely boost by signing a deal for next season.

The upper-order batsman, who is also looking to develop as a bowler, says he hopes to remain at Hove beyond that.

His decision gives the county a lift after they saw Henry Crocombe agree to join Surrey and then suffered a big Vitality Blast defeat at Warwickshire which ends any flickering hope of qualification for the next stage.

More departures are expected but Clark says he is pleased to sign an extension.

He said: "We have a special dressing room full of great players, coaches and people who I love working with.

“It is clearly not an easy time for the club and I’ve had to think very carefully about my future.

“It has become clear to me that I want to show my commitment to the club, dressing room and members with a strong hope that these off-field matters can improve as quickly as possible and we can fulfil the promise that I know this special group and great club can achieve.

“Assuming this is the case and the position is recovered, there is no reason why I can’t commit my future at Sussex beyond next year."

Head coach Paul Farbrace, who will be leaving his current post at the end of the season but could stay with the club on a part-time basis, said: “I am delighted that Tom has committed his immediate future with Sussex and is staying at Hove for one more season, at least.”
