A walk along Sussex’s famous white cliffs has been named one of the best in the country.

Consumer group Which? has rounded up its best UK walks for the summer, from Cornwall to the Lake District.

Included was the South Downs Way route across the Seven Sisters.

Introducing the list, Which? said: "In our survey of the best walks in the country, we've found coastal routes are often the favourite of Which? members.

"These range from gentle, Sunday afternoon strolls of less than three miles - to more challenging routes that take in clifftops, sheltered coves and spectacular scenery.

"Wherever you are in the country – and however fit or unfit you might be – there's a walk for you."

Walking routes were scored on factors such as scenery, wildlife, signage and accessibility, as well as for good food and drink options nearby.

Routes were categorised in a table by how easy it is - with the shortest walk a leisurely one mile - and the longest 12 miles.

On the list was the Seven Sisters section of the South Downs Way, which is known for its rolling chalk cliffs, dramatic views over the English Channel, and peaceful natural surroundings.

The 4.5-mile route, stretching between Seaford and Eastbourne, scored 82% overall in the survey and a perfect 5/5 for scenery.

It also scored 4/5 for both tranquillity and quality of waymarking.

The best walk in the UK was the Lizard Peninsula Circuit in Cornwall.

Which? said: "The wild and unruly southernmost point of England is the place to head to feel the sea breeze on your face on a hot summer's day.

"The coastline of the Lizard Peninsula, indented with caves and coves, has witnessed many shipwrecks, and was the top-rated walk not only in the South West of England, but also across the entire UK, in our latest survey."
