A 102-year-old war veteran has shared his wartime memories as part of a national storytelling project.
Walter Martin, a resident at Ponbay Lodge care home in Hastings and believed to be the last surviving glider pilot from the Second World War, welcomed a visit from Jay Hawkins, a Cambridgeshire resident travelling the UK to document the first-hand accounts of Second World War veterans.
Mr Hawkins is collecting signatures on a deactivated 1939 rifle, accompanied by photographs and personal stories, to create a lasting tribute that will eventually go on display in a museum.
Mr Martin said: "I was very honoured Jay has taken the time to speak to Second World War veterans like me and appreciated him making contact with me."
The veteran, who began his military service at 19, was originally due to fly Typhoon aircraft before being seconded to the Glider Pilot Regiment.
Mr Hawkins has collected more than 100 veteran signatures so far, including one from a 107-year-old.
During his visit, he also spent time speaking with other residents and care home staff, explaining the significance of his project and allowing them to hold the historic rifle.
The encounter sparked conversations throughout the home.

Zak Hampshire-Jones, general manager at Ponbay Lodge, said: "It was a privilege to welcome Jay to our home and to see Walter recognised in such a meaningful way.
"The visit inspired many conversations among residents and staff, and everyone was fascinated by Jay's project.
"Preserving the stories of people like Walter is incredibly important, and we are proud to have been part of such a special day."
Ponbay Lodge regularly hosts a community ‘Tea on Tuesday’ event, welcoming visitors each week from 10.30am to join residents for refreshments and freshly baked treats.
Mr Martin’s story adds to a growing archive of veteran testimonies that Mr Hawkins hopes will ensure that personal accounts of the war are never forgotten.
Ponbay Lodge is located on The Ridge, Hastings, TN34 2AE.
