Decision due on continued use of green space for Worthing ice rink

The temporary ice rink on Steyne Gardens, Worthing, has been located at the north end of the gardens for several years, between the months of November to February.

It has been recommended by the planning officer that the application be approved.

The report states that the ice rink "contributes to the vibrancy of the town over the Christmas period" and aligns with plans to regenerate the town centre.

The Worthing Society, a conservation group, have suggested that a  "condition" should be added to ensure the grass will be properly maintained after the ice rink is removed each year.

Members of the public raised similar concerns. Of the eight representations submitted, two objected to the plans, four were in support and two were neutral.

One objection stated: "The Steyne was left in a complete mess this year, where trucks had come in and churned up the grass and there was mud left all over the footpaths and nearly four months later part of the Steyne is still unusable."

Supporters argued that it has become an "invaluable part of the community", providing skating classes, supporting businesses and attracting visitors from Worthing and further afield.

Meanwhile, one respondent agreed with The Worthing Society’s view that the grass should be fully restored after the rink is removed. They also suggested using alternative locations to allow the Steyne time to recover.

The planning assessment considered this but highlighted that the damage caused to the grass could also be attributed to other temporary events using the space.

If approved, restoration of the grass each year would be reintroduced as a condition of planning permission.

The report states that maintenance of the grass was not completed this year due to building works for the next stage of Worthing’s Heat Network taking place in Steyne Gardens.

The application will go before Worthing planning committee on Wednesday, August 12.
