One of Brighton's biggest LGBT+ bars, Charles Street Tap, is set to close after decades of service.

The bar, formerly known as Charles Street, is located on Marine Parade and will close as its lease comes to an end in mid-September.

Chris Marshall, the general manager for the past 20 years, said: "For 25 years Charles Street has been a small part of the beating heart of Brighton’s LGBTQIA+ community and it has been my absolute honour to have been part of that story."

Many patrons have expressed their sadness over the bar’s closure.

Luke Head remarked: "This was the first gay bar I went to and one I also felt so safe at and not to mention the food, drinks and staff were amazing!"

Graham Barnett shared his memories of the venue: "From working there since it opened many years ago, worked for every manager, to hosting Mad Cow, Babycham, Disco Doughnut.

"Candy girls ( can't remember the name of the night,( lesbian night) Bar 150 ( Mondays) Coco Latte, kinky Dangerous. And many more.

"And I also won two heats for Drag Idol and won in the Two Brewers in London."

Matt Hopkins said: "A bit of a shock as was heavily involved in the organisation then opening of this venue along with teams from 'The Pennyfarthing' and 'Two Brewers' London."

Luke Appleton said: "Kinda sad as I’ve always felt safe here, the door staff are brilliant. It’s a great venue for groups."

Some patrons had mixed feelings about the bar's recent changes. Mark Bowden noted: "Sad it is closing but the renovation was awful, as was the music when we last visited last year. Lost all the soul that made it great!"

Sam Leach said: "Heart breaking - so many fabulous memories at this place. Will be bitter sweet going for one last time at the end of the month for my birthday. The team there are unbelievable!"

Paul Westwood commented on the broader implications of the closure, saying: "It’s a shame to see any pub and eatery close, its prime location, beautiful warm summer and a busy pride weekend just weren’t enough to keep the business afloat."
