What is shared ownership?
Shared ownership is a government-backed scheme that gives an alternative route to get on the property ladder.
It allows people to purchase a percentage share of property, typically between 25 per cent and 75 per cent of the property’s market value.
Mortgage payments are only paid on the shares purchased, while rent is paid to the housing association on the remaining, alongside service charges. Often, this means that the shared ownership route gives a lower monthly outgoing and deposit when compared with buying on the open market.
Homeowners at Lyon Quarter also have the option to purchase the remaining, unpaid shares through a process known as staircasing. A completely optional process, homeowners can purchase as many or a few as they like, up to 100 per cent ownership.
