West Sussex councillor backs boost to SEND services

West Sussex County Council has approved plans to expand Educational Psychology services, which play a crucial role in assessing and supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The decision comes in response to rising demand for Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNAs), reassessments and EHCP reviews.

Martin McCabe, leader of the Labour group on West Sussex County Council, said: "For SEND families, waiting for an assessment or the right support can be incredibly stressful.

"When you're already fighting to get your child the help they need, every unnecessary delay matters.

"That's why I welcome this decision to increase Educational Psychology capacity in West Sussex."

The council will procure an additional assessment service to operate alongside its current provision, aiming to reduce waiting times and help meet statutory deadlines.

The new service is expected to begin operating from January 2027.

Cllr McCabe said: "As a SEND dad myself, I know how important it is for families to feel that the system is working with them rather than putting another barrier in their way.

"Of course, approving procurement is only the first step.

"We now need to make sure this additional capacity delivers real improvements on the ground: shorter waits, timely assessments and high-quality advice for children, families and schools.

"I'll be monitoring to make sure that happens.

"Families deserve nothing less."

The move forms part of broader efforts to improve SEND provision in West Sussex, supported by additional government funding.
