Horsham firefighter runs 270km in memory of his father

Dan Game, based in Horsham and originally from Billingshurst and Rudgwick, is running 270km over 27 days to raise funds for Mountbatten Isle of Wight, the hospice that cared for his father, John Game and stepmother, Linda.

The challenge began on September 1 and involves 27 consecutive 10km runs, with the final run set to take place on what would have been his father’s birthday.

Mr Game said: "Dad would say I am mad to take on 27 ten kilometre runs in just 27 days.

"He would have told me there are other ways to raise money, but I like a challenge.

"The Mountbatten staff who cared for Dad before he died were just incredible.

"He wanted to be at his home, and they made sure this happened, setting up everything he needed to stay comfortable.

"They treated him with love and care."

Most of Mr Game’s runs will fit around his work schedule and daily dog walks, but he plans to finish the challenge by taking part in the Run Barns Green 10km on September 27, joined by friends.

He has already raised nearly £700 toward his £2,700 target.

This is not his first fundraising effort, having previously completed a marathon for charity.

Mountbatten Isle of Wight relies heavily on community support, with most of its funding coming from donations, grants, charity shops and fundraising activities.

The hospice delivers 85 per cent of its care in people’s homes, including the care provided to Mr Game’s father and stepmother.

Mountbatten Isle of Wight is the only hospice on the island and provides round-the-clock specialist care for those who need it most.
