Chichester bus driver marks 35 years with Stagecoach

Steven Stevens, who has devoted nearly 43 years to the industry, began his career with Southdown Motor Services in 1983 and has spent the majority of his working life behind the wheel in Chichester.

His grandfather also spent 39 years as a bus driver, and together they've clocked up more than 80 years in the profession.

Mr Stevens said: "I’ve always loved buses. My grandad was a bus driver and did 39 years. It’s in the blood."

Born near Harrow, Mr Stevens moved to Elmer Sands in 1963 before spending several years in Guatemala from 1968 to 1974.

He has been based at the Chichester depot ever since and still drives some of the routes he started out on, including the 700 service and journeys into Selsey.

He said: "Nothing changes really, does it?

"We’re still taking some of the same customers around."

Mr Stevens has also spent the past 15 years supporting the Goodwood Festival of Speed, helping with buildup for the event.

He said he enjoys being part of the team that brings together buses, cars and vehicles from around the world.

Marc Reddy, managing director of Stagecoach South, paid tribute to Mr Stevens' long service.

He said: "Steven’s 35 years with Stagecoach is a fantastic achievement and a testament to his dedication to our customers and colleagues.

"His knowledge, experience and genuine passion for buses are a real asset, and we’re delighted to celebrate this milestone with him."

Mr Stevens turned 69 this year but says he still enjoys the work and looks forward to every day on the job.

He said: "You never know what’s round the corner."

His journey from Southdown Motor Services to Stagecoach has spanned decades of change in the industry, from evolving fare systems and ticket technology to more frequent services and modern vehicles.

Yet for Mr Stevens, much about the job remains the same.

And as he marks 35 years with Stagecoach and nearly 43 years in the bus industry, he remains as passionate as ever about life on the road.
